Reading the Holy Gospel, Monday, August 29 (click here)

Monday, August 29: The Martyrdom of San Juan Bautista
Daily Gospel (Mk 6, 17-29): At that time Herod had sent John arrested and bound him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. For John said to Herod, "You are not allowed to have your brother's wife." Herodias hated him and wanted to kill him, but could not, for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and protected him; and hearing him were very perplexed, and heard him gladly.

And a convenient day came, when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, the tribunes and the leading men of Galilee. He entered the daughter of the same Herodias danced, and pleased Herod and the guests. The king then said to the girl: "Ask me what you want and I will give it." And he swore: "I'll give you what you ask, even half my kingdom." He left the girl and asked her mother: "What am I going to ask?". And she said, "The head of John the Baptist." Entering in immediately with haste to the king, he asked was: "I want you to give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist" .The king was filled with sadness, but would not reject her because of his oaths and diners. And immediately the king sent one of his guard with orders to bring John's head. He went and beheaded him in the prison and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard, they came and took his body and buried him.
